Hemp: Understanding the Difference Between CBD & THC

Hemp and marijuana both come from the cannabis plant family, but the biggest difference between the two lies in their tetrahydrocannabinol content – otherwise known as THC. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the psychoactive compound that provides the dopamine release and “high” sensation by binding to your CB1 and CB2 receptors in your brain. This is not to be confused with tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THC-A), which is the basic building block of THC and a raw, non-psychoactive form found in fresh cannabis. THC-A is converted to THC when heated through a process called decarboxylation. Delta 9 THC is another derivative of cannabis and the most abundant naturally occurring cannabinoid in the plant that has been isolated for health and enjoyment reason. It is known to have similar effects to what is generally associated with marijuana and must be treated with the same care and respect that we have for alcohol. As defined by the 2018 Farm Bill, hemp is the cannabis plant that contains 0.3% or less of THC whereas marijuana contains THC greater than 0.3%.

In addition to THC, cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-psychoactive compound found in hemp known for its potential calming, anti-inflammatory, and pain-relieving effects. It was first isolated from cannabis in 1940 and is also used as an anti-convulsant as well as aiding in sleep. In fact, one of the major epilepsy medications on the market used to help with seizures is based entirely on the health benefits of CBD as there is no “high” associated with this compound. Other cannabis compounds include:

  • CBN (Cannabinol): A cannabinoid that forms as THC degrades over time. It is not intoxicating like THC but may have mild psychoactive effects. CBN is primarily associated with potential sedative properties and is commonly linked to sleep support and relaxation
  • CBG (Cannabigerol): A non-psychoactive cannabinoid known as the precursor to THC, CBD, and other cannabinoids. It is being studied for its potential anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective and antibacterial properties
  • Terpenes: Aromatic compounds in cannabis that influence its effects, flavors, and scents (i.e., myrcene for relaxation and limonene for energy)
  • Indica: Type of cannabis strain known for its naturally relaxing and sedative effects due to its mix of cannabinoids and terpenes. It contains THC, which contributes to its psychoactive effects
  • Sativa: A cannabis strain known for uplifting, energizing effects, often used for focus and creativity
  • Lion’s Mane: A THC-free functional mushroom known for its potential cognitive benefits, including memory, focus, and nerve regeneration. Often used for brain health and neuroprotection
  • Reishi: A THC-free functional mushroom traditionally used for relaxation, immune support, and stress reduction. Often called the “mushroom of immortality” due to its adaptogenic properties
